Last Sunday some of our volunteers had a sneak preview of two homes in Burngreave which are taking part in Green Homes Sheffield open days. A dozen of us spent the morning learning and sharing ideas at the South Yorkshire Energy Centre in Heeley, and then had a tour of Fireside Housing Co-op and 266 Barnsley Road.
As you can see from the photo, Fireside have transformed their 4 formerly ordinary terraced houses into something very exciting! Now they are not only sharing gardens and solar energy, but a low impact extension that looks like something from Grand Designs. Rick explained the thinking that had gone into the design, from improving light levels, to choice of internal or external insulation, to getting the ventilation right. Many materials have been sourced from re-used items, including a beautiful floor.
Next Susannah showed us round 266 Barnsley Road, a large detached Victorian house. Draught-proofing and insulation have improved the comfort of this home, and it makes use of solar hot water and solar electricity. Several fine old windows have had secondary double glazing applied, while others have been completely replaced by energy efficient ones.
